2008 race

The 22nd Felixstowe Half Marathon took place on Sunday 5th October 2008.  Despite the appalling weather, the turnout was nearly as good as last year’s record, with 446 hardy runners battling strong winds and driving rain on their way to the finish.

The elements proved little hindrance to winner David Miller of Woodbridge Shufflers who crossed the line in 1:13:09, nearly 3 minutes ahead of David Earley in second place.  The ladies’ race was more closely fought with the first female home being Cathy Bruncan, running her first half marathon race, in a time of 1:34:00, just 45 seconds ahead of Becky McCorquodale.

The Bryant Bennett Memorial Trophy for the fastest male from Felixstowe Road Runners went to Chris Batty and the Chris Humphries Cup for the first female Felixstowe Road Runner home was won by Michelle Gordon.

The dismal weather led to a drop in the number of fun runners (this year sponsored by R. Bugg (Forwarding) Ltd) but 34 brave juniors set off on the one-and-a-half mile, out-and-back course on the prom and gave the wind a run for its money. Winner was Felixstowe runner Rhys Hinton-Smith.

We were honoured to have Felixstowe Mayor, Mike Deacon, to start the race and present the half marathon trophies, 90-year-old ex-Olympic athlete, Stan Cox, to count-down to the gun at the start, and Richard and Jenny Bugg to present the fun run trophies.

With the support of our sponsorship by Mediterranean Shipping Co, and with the high race turnout, we have been able to make the following charity donations:

British Heart Foundation                            £500
East Anglian Air Ambulance                        £500
Felixstowe Volunteer Petrol Rescue Service   £700
Grove Sanctuary                                        £200
